| THE OPTIONS PAGE |
This page allows you to set all of CacheSentry Pro's global options. The page is divided into two sections: General Options and Advanced Options. Unless you have special requirements, you can usually leave the Advanced Options set to their default values.
GENERAL OPTIONS
Display icon in taskbar area
This turns on and off the program status taskbar tray notification icon.
Normally, you would want to leave this on since it allows you to quickly access
the CacheSentry Pro settings; however if you feel your taskbar is already too
cluttered with icons you can turn it off. If you do turn it off and you need to
get to the main window, simply run another instance of CacheSentry Pro and it
will notice it is already running and will open the main window of the existing
instance and the new instance will immediately exit.
Display offline mode icon in taskbar tray
area
This turns on and off the taskbar tray notification icon that lets you control
whether IE is in online or offline mode. For more info, see the
Tray Icons section of this document.
Enable index.dat cache size bugfix
Internet Explorer keeps track of what it thinks is the size of all the content
that is in the cache at the moment. This value sometimes gets out-of-sync,
usually due to system crashes but on older versions of IE it simply wasn't
calculated correctly. When this option is enabled, CacheSentry Pro checks this
value in the index.dat file and fixes it to the correct size if it is off by
more than plus or minus 1 megabyte.
Start with the CacheSentry Pro main window
hidden
This is enabled by default. When checked (enabled), the main window is not
opened when CacheSentry Pro is run. When this is unchecked the main window is
displayed when you run CacheSentry Pro. This allows you to use the program as a
manual cache management utility or if you need to use the cache tools often and
don't want to go through the extra step of having to right-click on one of the
taskbar notification icons to open the main window,
Run in kiosk mode
In the
original CacheSentry, this was a command line option. Now it can be turned on
and off from inside CacheSentry Pro. When kiosk mode is enabled, warning and
error messages are redirected to the activity window instead of displaying a
dialog window the user must click on in order to clear. Note that this mode
does not lock users out of changing the settings of the program. If you are
planning on using CacheSentry Pro in a public place, you should also disable
both tray icons and make sure users cannot run another instance of the program
by hiding any shortcuts to CacheSentry Pro and make sure they cannot use the
"Run" command from the Start menu (since running another instance of Pro will
open its main window).
Warn if changes made to manager list before
loading a new one
If you make any changes to any of the managers in a manager set and try to load
a new manager set, it will ask you if you really want to load the new set
without saving the existing set that has changed. If you don't like being told
about such things you can disable this warning. If you are in kiosk mode
turning this warning off will save you a line of text in the activity log
whenever this warning needs to be issued since it then won't be issued (and
therefore not logged).
Display full name of each manager in the
activity window
If you do not care about seeing which manager in a manager set is deleting
files from the cache, uncheck this box to disable this feature. It will save
some space in the activity log as displaying the names of the managers uses two
extra lines per manager per cache management cycle. In general, it's handy to
keep this enabled especially when testing new managers.
Use alternate method of logging actions to
the activity window
The scanning actions listed in the activity window are made easier to read with
extra spacing and brackets around the manager names (if manager name displays
are enabled). Also, the full time and date is displayed with each scan.
Start CacheSentry Pro when you log in/start
Windows
When checked, CacheSentry Pro puts an entry in the
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\...\Startup registry key so every time you log in or restart
Windows, it will automatically start CacheSentry Pro in the background.
Unchecking this box removes the autostart entry from the registry
automatically.
ADVANCED OPTIONS
Time to wait before doing initial scan at
startup
CacheSentry Pro waits a few seconds before scanning the cache in case the user
is starting the program automatically when they start Windows or log in. This
delay is in place because scanning the cache causes a lot of hard disk activity
on the initial scan and this may slow down the boot up or login time into
Windows. If you have a slow computer or other special circumstances with your
cache you can increase this value so CacheSentry Pro waits longer before doing
the initial scan. if you never plan to run CacheSentry Pro automatically at
startup you can set this value lower as that will make the program update the
initial cache size display and technical info on the cache sooner.
Time to wait between scans when awake
When CacheSentry Pro is in its awake status because the cache is actively being
used, this is how long it waits between each scan of the cache. If you want the
program to scan and manager the cache more often, set this value lower. If you
want to save a few CPU cycles and not have the cache scanned so often, raise
this value.
Do this many normal scans per stray file scan
This tells CacheSentry Pro how many normal scans must be done before doing the
next stray file scan. (The stray file scan is always done at the initial scan
at startup). By default, the program checks for stray files on every scan of
the cache and this gives the most accurate cache size calculation. However,
scanning for stray files takes twice as long (or more) compared to just
scanning for the normal cached files. Therefore, on slower computer systems you
can do stray file scans less often by increasing this value. When you do this,
you may see a sudden drop in the size of the cache on subsequent scans since
the strays will not be included in the cache size calculation. You will then
see the size increase when the stray scan is finally done. This will not create
any serious cache management issues as the only side effect will be the cache
will quietly grow slightly larger than what you have set its size to and then
will be suddenly reduced by that extra amount when the strays finally are
scanned.

Note that the manual management buttons (actual and simulated) on the main window always scan for stray files, no matter what value this option is set to. |
