FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

Q: How much does CacheSentry Pro cost? How long is can I try it without paying?
A: It costs 15 US dollars (or an equivalent amount in other currencies) to purchase a key that will unlock CacheSentry Pro. You can use CacheSentry Pro for over 100 days without paying, however it will start nagging you after a month. :-) Go to www.enigmaticsoftware.com/shop to purchase a registration key.

Q: Why do I keep seeing files being deleted so soon ("last listed was 2 days old") from my cache in the activity log?
A: There are managers in the default set that delete certain files immediately after a period of time has passed. the activity log only displays the age of the last file deleted during a management cycle, so during that pass no other older files were ready to be deleted yet.

Q: Argh! I'm having trouble creating a set of managers that work properly!
A: Go to www.enigmaticsoftware.com/forums and ask for manager setup help there. Other users and support staff will be there to try and figure out why your managers aren't working as you expect them to.

Q: The initial setup section in the docs tells me to set Internet Explorer's cache size to 100%. If I do that, won't that use up all my hard drive space?
A: No. Setting it that way only tells how much space it can use, not how much it will use. Since you will have set CacheSentry Pro's size to a much smaller value, the cache will never grow that large. This setting of IE's cache size to the largest it will go is how CacheSentry Pro maintains control of the cache - IE doesn't get a chance to make room in the cache (and make deletions in the process.)

Q: I'm seeing my cache suddenly drop in size from time to time. Is something wrong?
A: If you have the options set to not scan for stray on every cache management cycle, the strays will not be included in the cache size calculation during the cycles they are not scanned. Also, if a large file gets deleted you may see the cache drop in size by that amount.

Q: Okay, I'm seeing the above drop as described above and I'm using your CacheMonitor utility to monitor deletions, and I'm seeing deletions from all over the cache, instead of all the oldest files grouped together. Is there a problem?
A: Maybe. First make sure you are sorting the cache entries in CacheMonitor by "Last Access Time". If the random deletions consist of downloaded programs (files with .EXE or .ZIP extensions) or media files (.WAVs, .MP3s, .MOVs, etc.) then that is normal - CacheSentry Pro with the default manager set gets rid of these files first since they are eating up most of the space in the cache and it is less likely you will need them in the cache. Also, note that CacheSentry Pro leaves favicon.ico files around longer than other Internet content. So if these are the files you are not seeing get removed, that is normal. If you still feel Internet Explorer is deleting files ahead of CacheSentry, double-check to make sure IE's cache size setting is set to a much larger value than CS Pro's max cache size value; or try setting CacheSentry's cache size to a smaller value.

Q: How come CacheSentry Pro isn't reporting any deletions? Why isn't it reporting additions to the cache?
A: The answer to the second part first: CacheSentry Pro is not a CacheMonitor - it doesn't monitor changes in the cache. It only uses the activity window for things it does on the cache itself.

Q: CacheSentry Pro says the cache is zero bytes in size, but when I do a folder properties on the cache directory in Windows it shows it's not empty. Why is there a discrepancy?
A: CacheSentry Pro doesn't include the index files that are used by IE to keep track of the cached files. (In other words, the discrepancy is overhead used by the cache.)

Q: Is CacheSentry Pro available in other languages?
A: Both the installer version and .zip version include a folder named "International". In there you will find a Unicode text file (editable in Windows XP with Notepad) that contains all of the text messages and controls used by the program. This file can be translated into other languages and then CS Pro will display all of its text in that language. See the readme file in the International folder for more info. Users are welcome to send translations to me and I will put them up on the web site if they will allow it.

Q: How do I upgrade to the latest version of CacheSentry Pro?
A: Download the latest version, then simply unpack/unzip the executable programs over the old copies. Or download the installer version and simply install it over itself. (It is not necessary to uninstall the old version first - it uninstalls any previous versions for you.) You can check to make sure you are running the latest version by going to the "About" page tab in the CacheSentry Pro main window.

Note: If you use the installer to upgrade to the latest version of the program and have bought a registration key, make sure you have the key handy since the installer will reset the stored key when you upgrade! If you have lost your key, you should download the .zip version and simply unzip over the existing files instead of using the installer.

Q: I keep seeing "Error 2" when it is trying to delete files from the cache. What is going on?
A: It is still not entirely clear why this happens. This error has been seen occasionally by users since the original CacheSentry was released in 1997. Error 2 means a URL or filename was not found in the cache by an OS call. The easiest way to stop this error from appearing in the activity log is to back up the entire cache using the backup tool, clear the index.dat file with the cache clear tool, reboot, and then restore the cache from the backup.
